Group Leader
Luís Pessoa received the “Licenciatura” degree in 2006 and PhD degree in 2011, both in Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto. Currently, he is a Senior Researcher and Manager of the Optical and Electronic Technologies (OET) group at the Centre of Telecommunications and Multimedia at INESC TEC. He is responsible for the overall coordination of the OET group, including the management of the team, the conception and management of R&D projects, the coordination of research students, and fostering the valorization of research results through new contracts with industry. He has been involved in the teaching of RF/microwave engineering and optical communications as an invited assistant professor at the University of Porto. He has authored/co-authored 60+ publications in international conferences and journals with peer-review (including 10 journal papers and 4 book chapters) and 2 EPO patents. He has coordinated several national and international research projects and participated in several European Union-funded research projects. His main research interests include coherent optical systems, radio-over-fibre, RF/microwave devices and antennas, underwater radio/optical communications, and underwater wireless power transfer.
Group Founder
Henrique Salgado graduated in Applied Physics (Optics and Electronics) from the University of Porto in 1985 and received the Doctor of Philosophy degree in Electronic Engineering and Computer Systems from the University of Wales in 1993 and the equivalence to PhD in 1997 from the Faculty of Engineering University of Porto. Presently he is an Associate Professor at the Department of Electrical Engineering of the University of Porto, where he teaches courses in the area of Telecommunications in the master and doctoral programs. Formerly from 1997-1999, he was a Research Fellow at the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering of the University College London, UK, and from 1993-1994 Research Assistant at the School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Systems, Bangor, UK. In 2008 he was visiting Professor at CERN – Centre for Particle Physics, Geneva, in the framework of the ACEOLE project. He has experience in management positions as a member of the Scientific Council of INESC TEC and from 2005–2019 as area leader and project manager of the Optical and Electronic Technologies (OET) group of the Telecommunications and Multimedia Unit of INESC. He founded the OET area in 2005, after successfully having attracted funding (440 k€) within the framework of the re-equipment program of the Foundation for Science and Technology. He was also the Coordinator of the Telecommunications section of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computers, FEUP, and from 2002–2003 was the Coordinator of the course “Optical Communications and Technology”, of the MSc degree in Electrical Engineering and Computers– MEEC, FEUP. In 2009/2010 and 2012/2013 was the Director of the PhD program in Telecommunications between the Universities of Minho, Aveiro, and Porto (Map-tele) being a member of the scientific committee of this program since 2007. In scientific research, he was involved as a principal investigator in 9 projects with national funding and participated as a researcher in 20 more projects, 9 of which with European funding. He published over 200 articles in international peer-reviewed journals and conferences, five book chapters, and registered five patents, being a regular reviewer for several scientific journals from IEEE and IET in the area of optical communications, telecommunications, and antennas. His research interests include radio-over-fibre technology and microwave photonics, digital equalization in coherent optical systems, all-optical networks, modeling of nonlinearities, and the design of compact multi-band antennas. He is a member of the Photonics and Communications Societies of the IEEE.
Senior Researchers
José Silva Matos is a Full Professor at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (DEEC) of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP). He teaches courses in the areas of Microelectronics, Testing, and Digital Systems Design. He is the Director of the Doctoral Program in Electrical and Computer Engineering (PDEEC) and the Vice-Director of the Doctoral Program in Engineering and Public Policy (PDEPP) at FEUP. He is a National Delegate and member of the Information and Communications Technologies Committee (ICTC) of the 8th Framework Program in Research, Innovation, and Development (Horizon 2020) of the European Union. He is part of the Board of Directors of Euromicro and of the Steering Committee of DSD (Euromicro Conference on Digital Systems Design) and DCIS (International Conference on the Design of Circuits and Integrated Systems). He is also a Senior Member of IEEE.
José Machado da Silva graduated and obtained his PhD, both in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto, Portugal, in 1984 and 1998, respectively. He joined the University of Porto in 1984 as a lecturer, and INESC Porto in 1991 as a researcher. He is currently Associate Professor at UPorto and Project Leader at INESC TEC, with teaching and research responsibilities in design and test of electronic circuits and systems. His research interests include analog, mixed-signal, and RF circuits, MEMS and sensors, wireless networks, and analog and digital signal processing.
Vitor Grade Tavares received the Licenciatura and M.S. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Aveiro, Portugal, in 1991 and 1994. He concluded his Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering, from the Computational NeuroEngineering Laboratory at the University of Florida, Gainesville – USA, in 2001. In 1999 he joined the University of Porto, Portugal, as an Invited Assistant, where he has been an Assistant Professor since 2002. He is also a Senior Researcher at INESC TEC. His main research interests have been in the area of very-low power neuromorphic chip design and biomimetic computing. He has recently engaged on circuits and signal processing research for Radio Frequency systems, especially those with applications in wireless sensor networks.
João Canas Ferreira received the Ph.D. degree in electrical and computer engineering from the University of Porto (Portugal), in 2001. He is currently an assistant professor with the Faculty of Engineering, University of Porto. His current research interests include dynamically reconfigurable systems, application-specific digital system architectures, ECAD tools and algorithms.
Artur A. Moura graduated and received his Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Porto in 1985 and 1999, respectively. He has been with the Faculty of Engineering of University of Porto since 1986, where he is Assistant Professor since 1999. He presently lectures subjects in the area of Telecommunications and Antennas. He has been a researcher of INESC TEC since 1986.
Maria Inês Carvalho graduated in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Porto in 1990 and received her M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from Lehigh University, USA, in 1994 and 1996, respectively. She joined the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at the University of Porto in 1996 as an assistant professor, where she is presently an associate professor. In 2009 she joined INESC TEC as a researcher. Her main research area has been the propagation of light in nonlinear media. Her work includes both the theoretical modeling of these phenomena and their numerical simulation and has addressed, among others, soliton beams in photorefractive media, incoherent solitons and microstructured optical fibers. She is a member of the Optical Society of America.
Cândido Duarte received his PhD in 2014 from the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto. He is with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at FEUP as an Assistant Professor in courses of fundamental electronics, measurements, sensors and instrumentation. His research interests include RF circuits for mobile communications systems, wireless transceiver architectures, low-power mixed-signal CMOS-IC design, energy harvesting circuits (PV, TENG), digitally-assisted analog systems, underwater wireless power transfer, and electronic circuit design/ optimization techniques.
Luis M. Oliveira received the graduation degree in physics, and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in biomedical engineering from Porto University, in Portugal, in 2000, 2007, and 2014, respectively. Since 2008, he has been a Professor with the Physics Department, Polytechnic of Porto – School of Engineering, Portugal. He is currently a researcher in biophotonics at INESC TEC. In recent years he has reviewed and authored several papers in the field of tissue optics and tissue optical clearing. He also co-authored a book in 2019 regarding optical clearing methods in biological tissues to increase their transparency. His research interests include tissue optics and the control of optical properties in tissues to develop new clinical methods.
Nuno Paulino received a M.Sc. degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto in 2011. He received his Ph.D. in the same field from the same institution in 2015, where he currently is an Assistant Professor. He is currently a researcher at INESC Technology and Science, where his research interests include run-time reconfigurable systems, embedded systems in FPGAs, co-processor hardware acceleration, and tools for hardware/software co-design automation.
Joana Tavares obtained the Master’s degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering in 2012 and the Doctoral degree in the Programme in Telecommunications (MAP-tele) in 2021, both at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto. She has been a researcher in the OET group from the Centre of Telecommunications and Multimedia at INESC TEC, since 2014. Since then, she has worked on several projects such as TWave, iBROW, STRx, and more recently, CONVERGE, TERRAMETA, and SUPERIOT.
Currently, she is an Invited Assistant Professor at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of FEUP, teaching in the field of telecommunications. Her main research interests include optical fiber communication systems and smart antenna arrays.
Research Fellows
Sofia Inácio graduated in Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering from University of Madeira in 2013 and the M.Sc. degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering with a specialization in Communications Technology from FEUP in 2016. Her master’s thesis was accomplished at INESC TEC, entitled “Projeto de Antenas para Comunicações RF Subaquáticas”. She is currently attending the MAP-tele Doctoral Program in Telecommunications at the University of Porto. Her research interests include electronics, antennas, RF engineering, and microwaves.

João Araújo graduated in Electrical and Computer Engineering in 2017 from Instituto Superior de Engenharia do Porto (ISEP) and obtained his M.Sc. degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering with Specialization in Telecommunications from the same institution in 2019. Since then, he has been a Research Fellow at INESC TEC, part of the OET group of the Centre for Telecommunications and Multimedia (CTM). Presently, he is attending the MAP-tele Doctoral Program in Telecommunications at the University of Porto. His research interests include high-speed optical and wireless communications, underwater communications, and optoelectronic devices.

Mohamed Ghatas graduated from the Faculty of Science, Ain Shams University, Cairo, Egypt in 2012. He obtained his M.Sc. degree in Physics within the scope of electromagnetics and antennas from the same faculty in 2020. He has been working as a teaching assistant and research assistant in the Faculty of Science, Ain Shams University for six years. Currently, he is a research fellow at INESC TEC and a member of the Optical and Electronic Technologies (OET) group, Center for Telecommunications and Multimedia (CTM). Additionally, he is a Ph. D. student in the MAP-Tele Doctoral Program in Telecommunications at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto. His research interests include RF circuits and subsystems, antennas, electronics, and wireless communication systems.

Maria do Rosário Pinheiro received the graduation and M.S. degrees in biomedical engineering from the Polytechnic of Porto – School of Engineering, Porto, Portugal, in 2020, and 2022, respectively. She is a PhD student in biomedical engineering at Porto University, Porto, Portugal, since 2022. She joined INESC TEC in 2023, as a research fellow from Optical and Electronic Technologies (OET) group of the Centre for Telecommunications and Multimedia (CTM). Her main research interests include the study of broadband optical properties of healthy and pathological tissues and the application of optical clearing methods for the development of innovative optical methods that can be used for the early-stage diagnosis of cancer pathologies.
